So.
Um.
I probably wouldn't have put that vine bush out on the balcony if I knew it'd suddenly become a tentacle plant.
I'm just glad that there's a glass do—
[the sounds of a crash]
...
...Well, this is going to be fun.

[Kate watches him suspiciously when he tugs the chair out. Not that she's surprised that chivalry still exists, but that it's Amory who's doing it. The decent French is just the cherry on top.]
If you pull this chair from under me, I swear I will kick your ass into next Tuesday.

And why would I ever do such a thing?
[He smirks, noting the confused look on the waiter's face. He was clearly trying to figure out what this pair was doing together at the restaurant. Friends? A couple? Enemies?]

[Maybe she's slightly impressed, but once again, she's not telling him this to his face.
For now, she ignores her dining companion to peruse the menu and find the most expensive and edible thing on the menu, just to mess with him.]

[ He's having too much fun with this, and though he'll never admit it, having Kate as company is a large part of that fun. And he won't even face fault when she orders the most expensive thing on the menu. He'll just clench his napkin underneath the table. Discreetly. ]

She even goes as far to order a inexpensive glass of the house wine. Hey, if the waiter isn't going to check IDs, she's going to play up her appearance to look a good three years older than she actually is.]
It's not proof if you're just pretending not to be a pig.

[He doesn't even raise an eyebrow at Kate's choice of beverage, knowing that he's done the same at her age. Well, when he could. Amory usually had the other problem of looking younger than his age. He orders the salmon and waits for the waiter to step away before continuing the conversation.]
For someone that couldn't eat, my Father was stickler when it came to table manners. Put your elbows on the table and belch in front of him? He'll cut off your head. [The last part is an exaggeration obviously.]

[Not that her own father had actually done that--her mom was her etiquette teacher--but Kate had heard stories from other kids from fellow well-to-do families. Horrible ones that made her grateful that her dad is a workaholic and her mother was too down to earth to care much about charm school and the like.]
What about your mom?
[Kate, even though she doesn't say anything, notices that for once, Amory speaks freely about his father. This is a new step for him, between them. The argument in the hospital seems so far away.]

[He's being pretty melodramatic, for the teenage years spent with his Father had been pretty enjoyable. Traveling around with him and his friends? There had been several unpleasant incidents, nevertheless he didn't have much room to complain. Even if his Father did have a perpetual stick up his ass.]
My Mom? [He pauses for a moment] She had...a busy job when I was growing up, but she never made it seem that way. I was spoiled with attention - if I ever needed her, even it was to ask some inane question - she was there for me. Mom was the sort of person who's life centered around caring about others.
...I always wondered how they got together. I mean, they couldn't be any different. Fate's a complete mystery sometimes.

[Kate never gave her parents' marriage much thought until it was prematurely ended by her mother's murder. She always assumed it was a marriage that started off fine and then went off into the range of staying together because it was what they were used to. The truth about how much they loved each other slapped her in the face in the aftermath of her mom's absence when her dad fell to pieces in the only way he knew how: he worked.]
Ever thought of getting married?

[Amory has been careful not to bring up Kate's mother, knowing himself how sensitive the topic can be. It seems though that her parent's relationship was stronger then his own. He often wondered whether his Father had even cared after his Mom's passing with apathy being the only word to describe his reaction.]
Nope. Wouldn't do that to someone. You?

[He wasn't the only one who was broken up about her mother dying, but Kate's not saying that much. Not right now. Last thing she wants to do is cry in public.]
I thought about it when my sister was getting married, but never serious. It was mostly about how much money I wasn't going to spend on a one day thing like she was doing.
[This isn't to say that Kate wouldn't like to get married, but she's still young after all. She's not even twenty yet and really, her prospects aren't the marriage type. Who is she going to get hitched to? Eli? Please.]
