One of the few universal truths of the City is that one day we'll forget. No matter your experiences or your relations, regardless of whatever meaning you've constructed, everything here will reach an end.  Unlike death, you won't take to your grave the years behind you, but  you'll return to your life, completely oblivious. The mind isn't as tenacious as you would think. In fact, you'd surprised how easily a lifetime of identity can be sloughed off. Expecting some artifact to remain when you leave is idealism.

Some could argue that the transitory nature of the City adds more meaning. You've got a limited time together, so you better utilize each moment to the fullest, as the cliche goes. You'll spend all your nights fucking and all that heart-felt bullshit. But you'll still forget. It will still be pointless. Maybe you say you're living in the immediate, so even though reality's a short width of time, it doesn't matter.

The point is— none of this will have ever existed in your mind. Doesn't that invalidate all your experiences? Why try so hard when it ultimately means nothing?

We don't try because of the difference it can make. We try because of the difference not trying can make.

Don't get snappy because you asked a question and didn't get the pessimistic answer you wanted.

How do you know that's true? How do you know that when you leave here for the last time, the very last time, when the City is completely done with you, that you won't remember anything about this place at all?

And that's the point I'm trying to make. Everyone who's left and come back hasn't remembered, but what about the people that don't come back at all? You've got no evidence to support the fact that they don't remember.

You can't know that for sure, though. At least you aren't arguing that this isn't real.

[identity profile] absinthe-eyed.livejournal.com 2010-09-23 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
It does mean something--time in the City. Experiences.

I doubt all of us forget.

[identity profile] absinthe-eyed.livejournal.com 2010-09-23 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course I don't want to forget. Beyond that, however... not everyone here goes back home. There's not always a life to return to. I see no reason to assume that--if there is something beyond death--the afterlife would annihilate all memories of the City.

That isn't to say that I believe in an afterlife or the persistence of memories, but to deny any possibility that experiences in the City remain after we leave would make what life I have now miserable. In this case, I would like to suspend judgment.
